The birth of the Association is the result of the will and needs of the producers, assisted and supported in this way also from ' ARSSA and by the Slow Food which protects the Presidio. The producers, last spring, have had free loan some electric fence powered by solar panels, for use only on parcels of land intended for seed production of lentil, to protect it from attacks of wild animals. ARSSA then collected semen samples from the fields of each farmer and propagating them to undergo genetic testing to ensure the exclusive cultivation of the original variety.
L ' objective of the project, still ongoing, is to recover, maintain purity, to preserve, multiply and spread the local variety called "Lentil Santo Stefano di Sessanio ", as it was selected thanks to 'joint action and the environment. The lentil is grown in St. Stephen's mountain valleys of the southern side of Gran Sasso, up to 1600 meters above sea level, where the high altitude helps to keep away from the attack of pests.
The birth of the Association of Producers of lentil Boxing of Sessanio therefore represents a small piece in the context of the conservation of agricultural biodiversity in the Abruzzo region. The first official public participation of the newly formed association will take place at Salone del Gusto in Turin, October 23 to 27, which will be presented at national and international press.
